Source: The Brownsville Herald, TexasSept.迷你倉 21--PORT ISABEL -- The Port Isabel Tarpons remained undefeated on the season by downing the St. Joseph Academy Bloodhounds 49-18 in non-district action Friday at Tarpon Stadium. The Tarpons (4-0), ranked No. 4 in the Rio Grande Valley and No. 9 in the state among Class 3A teams, were led by running back J.J. Gonzalez, who rushed seven times for 138 yards and three touchdowns. Gonzalez scored three of the four times he touched the ball during the first half, finding the end zone on plays covering 5, 26 and 96 yards."It feels really good (to do something like that)," Gonzalez said. "The execution (by the team) was awesome. The line did a fantastic job of blocking."Port Isabel also was sparked by fellow running back Jacob Losoya, who ran for 94 yards on 11 carries and three TDs as well. He found the end zone on runs of 13, 12 and 31 yards. The Tarpons outscored the Bloodhounds 14-6 during the first quarter and led 35-6 at halftime.Juan Aguilera, also a running back, opened the scoring for the Tarpons, going in from 3 yards out with 7:27 left in the first period for a 7-0 advantage on Port Isabel's initial possession. Gonzalez's 5-yard TD scamper made it 14-0 before SJA quarterback Adrian Gutierrez scrambled 33 yards to score with 1:06 remaining in the opening period, pulling the Bloodhounds (2-2) to within 14-6.The second quarter belonged to Port Isabel as Losoya tallied on a 13-yard TD run before Gonzalez sprinted 26 and 96 yards to the end zone on back-to-back touches. Those TDs put the Tarpons ahead by 29 points at halftime.Trailing 28-6, the Bloodhounds could have cut the Tarpons' lead to two touchdowns late in the first half when they drove to the Port Isabel 5-yard line and faced a second-and-goal situation. However, an interception at the goal line by Aguilera with a short return allowed the文件倉Tarpons to take over at their 4-yard line, and on Port Isabel's first play, Gonzalez bolted 96 yards down the right sideline to put the game out of reach at 35-6 just 20 seconds before intermission.Losoya's 12-yard TD run at the 5:14 mark of the third quarter made it 42-6 before SJA tallied its second TD with 3:19 showing in the period on a 30-yard pass from Gutierrez to Adrian Guerra, who went into Friday's contest as the Valley's top receiver in terms of catches. Against the Tarpons, he finished with nine receptions for 97 yards.During the final quarter, Losoya's 31-yard scoring burst with 11:51 showing made it 49-12 before the Bloodhounds recorded their third TD with 1:22 left on a 5-yard pass from Daniel Gonzalez to Luis Varela.Luis Cacho nailed all seven of his extra-point kicks for the Tarpons, while SJA came up short three times on its two-point conversion tries."We were able to run the football and control the game a little bit against them," Port Isabel coach Monty Stumbaugh said. "St. Joe likes to run a quick-tempo offense, and it wears you down."We moved the ball on offense and our defense played well, so I was pleased with that," he added. We knew we had to run the football and control the clock so we could keep their offense off the field. I thought we did a pretty good job of doing those things."When the two teams played one year ago at Canales Field in Brownsville, the Tarpons emerged with a 51-30 victory.Non-district action continues for both squads next Friday as Port Isabel is at home against Grulla and SJA visits Pharr Oratory.Roy Hess writes for The Brownsville Herald.
