NCCU Eagles hold food drive challenge

Central University is organizing an "Eagles Attacking Hunger" food drive this weekend and looking for donations.The food donations will go toward the Durham branch of the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina, at a time when the bank has seen about 19,000 more Durham residents seeking help this summer, in part due to a state computer software problem that has left families without food stamps."There are people who work 40 hours a week and don't make enough to get by," said Daniel Ball, student and president of the Social Work Society at NCCU. "People who work don't often qualify for food stamps."Ball knows hardship. In the past, he's had to rely on food banks, and he knows what it's like to go two, three days without food or cherish that one meal a day.Now, he hopes to fill a van full of donations and take them to those in need."They may get meals at school," Ball said of children who are going hungry in Durham. "Some of the儲存倉 don't get supper."He said he wanted to conduct a drive before the holidays, when people have less to give. They're looking for nonperishable food items, such as canned goods or boxes of macaroni and cheese, as well as formula and diapers. Peanut butter's always a winner, he said.Friday is the campus portion of the food drive challenge, when academic departments and student organizations will face off and try to collect the most items.
