Woodard leads two-week school food drive challenge

Source: The Sun, Yuma, Ariz.迷你倉出租Aug. 29--To help fill empty shelves at the Yuma Community Food Bank, Woodard Junior High School is leading the charge for a citywide food drive with other local middle schools. While lofty, Woodard School Resource Officer (SRO) Tomas Salviejo said that their goal to collect 50,000 pounds of nonperishable food items is achievable. The food drive will include Yuma Elementary School District 1 middle schools as well as Crane Elementary School District campuses, each with about 20 to 30 kids per classroom. In addition to those seven schools, some high schools in Yuma are also wanting to contribute to the cause as well, said Salviejo.Setting the bar at 100 items per classroom, he said that Woodard classes that collect the most cans will receive a reward, like a pizza party, and other middle schools are proposing similar rewards. During Woodard's food drive last year, their campus alone raised over 4,000 pounds of food."One of our main goals here is to educate the kids to give back to the community, because a lot of times everybody has this mentality, 'If I'm not hurting, I don't have to think about anyone else,'" said Salviejo, "...We want them to go outside of their comfort zone."He said that while some students don't necessarily experience hardships on a day-to-day basis, many other students do visit the food bank with their families to help put food on the table."It just helps them out, and that's the main thing," Salviejo said. "I don't want th迷你倉se kids to think that unless they're down they don't have to do anything."This year's food drive, led by SROs on each participating campus, will last for two weeks from Monday, Sept. 30, to Friday, Oct. 11.Salviejo said that he is also hoping that the community will chip in as well to help the students meet their goal."I think with everybody helping, we can do this. Right before the holidays, this would help out a lot," said Salviejo. "It's our community, it's not like it's going to Phoenix or anywhere else, it's going to our own backyard ... We're just trying to strengthen our community as a whole, we know we need to step up when we're needed."Campus SROs can be contacted for more information about individual school food drives, and community members can drop off nonperishable food items to the following locations during the food drive:--Woodard Jr. High School, 2250 8th Ave., SRO Tomas Salviejo, 502-7200--Gila Vista Jr. High School, 2245 S.
