Dead baby insured twice for HK$4m
A single mother who bought two insurance policies on her baby's life failed to tell either insurer about the other policy when she tried to claim more than HK$4 million after the girl died when she was four months old, the District Court heard yesterday.迷你倉出租Man Choi-wa, 32, denies one count of fraud and one of attempted fraud.Man gave birth to Man Yuen-yee on December 11, 2007, prosecutor Anthony Chau Tin-hang told the court.She took out a HK$2.5 million policy with HSBC Life (International) for Yuen-yee on January 16, the day she received the birth certificate.On January 31 she bought a HK$2 million policy, this time from Manulife (International).Man earned HK$7,500 a month as a saleswoman. She was to pay a monthly premium of HK$1,257 to HSBC and an annual premium of HK$13,152 to Manulife. She was the beneficiary of both policies.In June and July 2008, Man filed claims with both insurers, sa迷你倉ing Yuen-yee had died of suffocation in their hotel room in a Guangdong village on April 28. Yuen-yee's body was cremated.Manulife paid HK$2 million in December that year, but later found Man had failed to disclose that the child was also covered by a second policy. The insurer has a cap on the total coverage for a single child.Manulife alerted HSBC and reported the matter to the police.HSBC held its own inquiry, whereupon Man admitted she had provided misleading information while making the claim.In October 2009, Manulife asked Man for a refund.She returned HK$760,000 and both parties agreed to end the case.But prosecutors took Man to court for giving false information to both insurers.Earlier, Man told police under caution that she had wanted to cancel the HSBC policy but was so busy taking care of her baby that she had forgotten.The hearing continues today before Judge Gary Lam Kar-yan.儲存倉
